During the lockdown of 2020, almost every magazine story was on the spread of COVID and it’s effects on the world. It continued to be a topic of conversation over the next year and a half. After being bombarded by these stories from news, media, and magazines I began to take an interest in Illustrating some of the stories. This one in particular was interesting, it talked about a series of expansions Marta was planning on making prior to the global pandemic and how all of their planning and investments were at risk of falling through. For this magazine article I wanted to create a cut paper digital illustration to accompany this story. The paper layering was meant to represent a "house of cards", fragile and unpredictable. Those world I felt embodied most of what we as a society were experience during that time. I also wanted to make the color palette inviting and bright to depict the unassuming and vibrant world that the virus was effecting. After reading the article, creating a mood board (below) and mind-mapping I decided to create a design that emphasizes the unassuming Marta train traveling to its own demise without even knowing it, because in fact that is exactly what the article was about. Marta's planned and exciting expansions has been foiled by an unknown and unanticipated enemy. The design was meant to complement and emphasize not only the article but our confusion as a society as a whole during the COVID global pandemic.
