media. linoleum carving, ink, surface design

This is another linoleum carving project that was created as a fun exploration of surface design. Surface design or repeat pattern can be used to adorn wrapping paper, tissue paper and a multitude of textile fabrics. For this specific project the aim was to design a folk inspired Christmas paper to wrap packages that would go under the Christmas tree. As you can see in Figure 1 this was a two part printing process, first to be printed was the pink and green leaves to the be printed on top of with the black line work. These two prints have been separated in Figure 1 to see the two part process more clearly. The main page image, is the two images below printed on top of one another, and this was used as the surface design. Which was repeated and produced into a roll of wrapping paper.

FIGURE 1
in order to separated the colors in the image directly above, the linoleum was cut into pieces. the bulk of the block was the pink, which was inked all at once. but the green leaves were inked individually and then placed back into the original block (like puzzle pieces) and then printed all at once.
