This oil painting began as a portrait study to refine and explore the human complexion and skin tone. This is a portrait of a well know christian theologian named R.C. Sproul. Below you can see the images that inspired this work as well as a detailed shot of so of the thick paint strokes in the face. After several sessions relearning oil paint and a week or so color mixing I completed this portrait on a inspiring Christian figure. the main focus during the process was to capture accurate likeness, mix skin tones well, and to add a life- likeness to the portrait. Displaying the same joy and abounding hope this man was known to have in his life.

Oil painting is known for its rich smooth color and as a byproduct, its long drying time. Sessions could only be so long until the canvas was too wet to continue working. So eating an oil painting, similar to an elephant, can only be one bite or small sessions at a time. This was an exploratory project that tested artistic abilities and patience. Oil painting is just that "a test in patience and endurance".
